Human belief was the catalyst that gave power to the Elder Gods as well as the Younger Gods.  Humans did not understand Ya'Ria or her creatures, so in their fear and ignorance they created the gods of pain, lies, and war.  With their worship those gods became powerful and soon demanded worship from all creatures, even from Ya'Ria herself.  These demands sowed much discord among the Elves.  Soon all of Ya'Ria was covered in war.  During these “God Wars” the Defender, the Healer, and Ya'Ria's Wrath were created.  The war raged and all hope seemed lost.  Many elves sided with the Elder gods, the other with the Younger gods.

With a word Arcanium halted the war.  Understanding what happened he ordered the created gods to lay down arms and no more interfere with the children of Ya'Ria.  Arcanium then asked which of his created races wished to bear the burden of this pact through the centuries. The dwarves declared they were guardians of Ya'Ria's heart, thus unable to keep the gods in check.  The Elves declared their guardianship of Ya'Ria's life, therefor unable to keep the gods in check as well.  The Humans, knowing their belief created the gods, gladly accepted Arcainium's Covenant.  The chosen human was named Emperor and Vessel of Arcanium's power.

In the centuries after the Elven nation split.  The followers of the Elder gods chose to dwell in the deep caves and wilds of Ya'Ria.  Those who chose the Younger gods live in cities of great trees or smaller forests.
